R.I. – The White Horse Tavern

First up, this is the “Oldest Restaurant in Continuous Operation” in the USA. This restaurant/bar is called The White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island. We stumbled upon an article that lists the “Most Iconic Bar in Every State” and the article proceeds to explain why each bar chosen had made the list. (click here for article) This restaurant/bar is also listed on another article that lists the “Oldest Restaurant in Every State” and the article here hits up on the year established and how many times it has changed ownership (if applicable). (click here for article) This particular restaurant flies solo as being one that is listed in multiple random articles that I stumbled upon, so we HAD to check it out! All that said, let’s get down to the adventure of The White Horse Tavern itself. I don’t remember everything the two of us had ordered, nor do I remember the drinks we had…but I DO remember feeling the history as soon as we stepped through the doors and sat in the tiny ORIGINAL room that has only THREE tables. THREE. No more, no less! There were also only three stools for seating at the bar itself. Cozy? Absolutely. Crowded. Just a smidgen! The greetings and the service, I remember, was top notch and they also have a very small selection of souvenirs you can purchase. But, at the time, we were not worried with souvenirs for “iconic bars” (which is the first article I had found). We were there for the nostalgia of the location and for a meal. I do remember I had the beef Wellington, which was good…but I have had Gordon Ramsay’s beef Wellington at Hell’s Kitchen (Vegas location) and that’s a REALLY tough dish to top. Again, I stress, The White Horse Tavern’s dish is good too. I would definitely order theirs again if given the opportunity to do so. If you want to feel an ages-old bar/restaurant nostalgia in New England, this is the place to go! And when you’re done there, check out some of the other local things to do, like the Cliff Walk – where you stroll the cliffsides along the Atlantic Ocean and gaze at all the mansions in the area, or 40 Steps – which is a stone/concrete stairway down to the shore along the Cliff Walk. Thanks for reading another adventure…that had already taken place many moons ago! (Photos from our adventure here were taken June 2023)
